This year the first English translation of Anton de Kom’s We Slaves of Suriname was published. The book, first published in Dutch in 1934, is about the history of the Dutch colony of Suriname. Anton de Kom, himself a descendant of enslaved people, writes about the atrocities of slavery. In addition, he meticulously describes how colonial rule continued to wreak havoc on Suriname after the official abolition of slavery. Because of his anti-colonial work he was arrested in Suriname and forced to move to the Netherlands. Anton de Kom joined the resistance during WWII and died in a Nazi POW camp.
